Our team created a list of numerous accomplished architects and evaluated them based on their mastery of the trade and the quality of their work. We also assessed them based on their years of experience, their industry accreditations and certifications, and the strength of their portfolios. The following are 15 of the best residential architects in Tampa. Each of these firms is more than capable of developing visionary and innovative designs and designing structures with impressive form and function.

This list includes both licensed architects and residential designers who can both design stunning homes but differ in other services offered. Architects are trained in design, engineering, and project management and have passed a licensing exam. Residential designers typically don’t manage projects and plans will need to be approved by a structural engineer. Whether you choose to hire an architect or a residential designer will depend on your project needs and complexity.

About Balber Architecture, Inc.

Balber Architecture is a nationally accredited architecture firm. In 2016, David Balber established the firm based on the central tenet that all projects belong to the client and not to the firm. One of the firm’s most unique projects is the modern home featured here. Touting an external structure of a typical split-level house, the building consists of six walkable levels, each connected by seven or fewer steps. Another is the home’s transitional aesthetic—the house features a mix of modern, traditional, beach, and Spanish-Mediterranean design elements. The team also made sure that the home’s landscape mimicked the modern lines of the building—Balber Architecture worked with landscape designers to ensure that the plants cascade down the front of the house, like any other architectural element.

The exterior courtyard serves as the organizing element into which all spaces lead. Allusions to an exterior courtyard are reinforced by the large windows and glass doors on the rear facade. The large kitchen and courtyard spaces blend together through three arches, allowing an informal dining and gathering space for the client’s many social events and parties. Multiple interior and exterior balconies ritually lead the occupants outwards to experience the courtyard. About Twelfth Street Studio

Twelfth Street Studio was formed as a collaboration between longtime colleagues and previous firm principals Rick Penza and Brandon Hicks. Centered in downtown Tampa, the online magazine 83 Degrees called Twelfth Street Studio one of the coolest offices in Tampa and St. Pete—an example of the “slew of progressive, out-of-the-box workspaces emerging throughout the region.” The residential architecture firm is led by Rick Penza who has won the 2002 Eduardo Garcia Award and the 2004 Planning Commission Community Design Award of Excellence. He has worked with famous celebrity architect Nate Berkus from TLC’s Nate and Jeremiah By Design. Penza’s work has also been featured in Florida Architect Magazine and Florida Designers Review Magazine. Brandon Hicks, on the other hand, has been awarded the USF School of Architecture and Community Design Service Award 2013, the 2012 Eduardo Garcia Award, and the Andrew Ferendino Endowment Scholarship in 2000. He is also an adjunct professor at the USF School of Architecture and Design. The firm’s process emphasizes the importance of taking into account site factors, cultural and economic environments, programming, and of course budget constraints. This makes its process highly personalized.

Featured Projects

One of Twelfth Street Studio’s residential projects was the “Palma Ceia” Residence in Tampa. The firm worked with their client with renovations that encompassed significant changes to an existing traditional structure. Large-scale alterations included a new entry sequence, reflection garden, and second-floor recreation room. The project also included custom stairing, a wine room, furniture, and door handles. Another project was the “Westshore Residence” in Tampa. This 8,000-square-foot, new-build residence used an open floor plan designed around a series of protected grand trees. The firm worked to create an incredible interior design in collaboration with Nate Berkus Associates. Twelfth Street Studio also worked on a “Hyde Park Residence,” converting an original 1908 Sears and Roebucks kit house, located in the Hyde Park Historic District in Tampa.

“As a child, I always liked art, but it was always perspective drawings that fascinated me. My parents had a construction company and I always enjoyed being on the job site. On summer breaks, I would spend ‘quality time’ with my grandfather which consisted of building structures around the house (tree houses, sheds or playhouses in the woods). As an architect, I am inspired by buildings that have an element of surprise. Buildings that appear a certain way and as you experience them, they throw you a curve ball.” – Jon Paul Bacariza

Over the last two decades, Wilson has worked on theatre, cinema, and opera projects across the world, including Tokyo, London, and Ankara. They’ve worked on interior design projects across Florida, including in Siesta Key, Boca Grande, Venice, and Cherokee Park. The firm has won a incredibly long list of awards for their interior design work. Just in the last year, Solstice has received the Platinum Award for Best Overall Home, the Platinum Award for Best Kitchen, the SRQ Home of the Year, the Platinum Award from Best Bathroom, the Platinum Award for Best Sustainable / Green Project, and the Silver Award for Best Landscape Design / Pool / Outdoors, all from CompassHauss.

Featured Projects

Situated on a quarter acre lot in St. Petersburg, Solstice worked to design the interior of a 3,700-square-foot island residence on the Lido Shores. The home was to be an enclave of modern design situated between the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay. Solstice worked with the architect to design the floor plan outside to include a stepping-stones bridge over a reflecting pond. The firm designed the interior so that all the main public and private spaces surround the pool area, including the living room, kitchen, outdoor area, library, and master bedroom. Upstair rooms were designed to take advantage of clear nightlines to ocean views. Solstice had to use elements of design to mitigate the oddly shaped, trapezoidal lot the home was being built on. The design firm worked with the architecture to utilize unique angels in the interior designs so that the office, laundry room, library, and upstairs terrace “absorb” the angle. The firm also worked to design the unencumbered doorways, multiple vistas, and transom windows that grant natural light into the home.

It is currently the largest American architecture-engineering firm and one of the largest interior design firms. However, besides their massive scale, they’ve focused intently on the Tampa Bay area, and have truly left their mark. The Tampa office has been part of HOK’s network since 1984. Since then, it’s been feted as Firm of the Year by the IIDA’s South Florida Chapter and named as “Best Large Company to Work for in Florida” by Florida Trend Magazine. The firm, lead by Principal Architects Roger Soto and Thomas Beyer, has been a part of creating many of the landmarks in Tampa. Featured Projects

HOK’s Tampa office provided architectural and interior design to renovate multipurpose spaces in the Ronald McDonald East House at 35 Columbia Drive, on Davis Island in St. Petersburg. The Ronald McDonald East House holds 34 bedrooms to offer to family members of the pediatric inpatients at the adjacent All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine, so they aren’t forced to sleep in the waiting room. HOK’s interior design team led renovations of the house’s 6,830-square-foot first floor. The first floor was refurbished to better offer a healing environment while visitors used the community kitchen, dining area, administrative offices, reception, lounge, play spaces and family intake areas. HOK worked closely with the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) to design an interior finish palette and to select furniture that would help create a comforting, healing environment. The renovation included converting existing light fixtures to efficient LED lighting. All finishes and furnishings used were donated by local manufacturers for the project.
